Pesticides contributing to early deterioration of perishable food items – Scientists

Perishable food items in Ghana are deteriorating rapidly due to excessive pesticide and fertilizer use, particularly affecting vegetables like okra and pepper. Traders at the Ayigya market report faster spoilage, with produce rotting within days.

Scientists from CSIR confirm that misuse of chemicals weakens crops’ natural defenses, hastening decay and making them vulnerable to pathogens.

Herbicides like paraquat also contribute to this issue. To combat spoilage, experts recommend proper chemical application, pre-harvest intervals, and storing crops in cooler conditions.

Traders are urging stricter regulation from the Food and Drugs Authority to ensure safe farming practices.
