Recent power cuts not due to financial problem – Energy Minister

The energy ministry has adequate funds to generate enough power for the country, says the Minister of Energy, Peter Amewu.

His reaction comes on the back of assertions that recent power outages are due to the government’s inability to procure fuel for electricity production.

Energy Minister John Peter Amewu assured of enough funding in his sector, adding that dumsor is a thing of the past.

“I can assure you that, a lot of measures have been put in place for the stable supply of power. I want to get to my room and see the lights on if once a while you witness light outs, it has nothing to do with power generations. We have sufficient generations and sufficient financial backing too. Dumsor is a thing of the past.”

He was also quick to blame past administrations for the height of the country’s energy challenges.

“This is what someone has done to this country and we must make sure we move from it. We have learned from the negative past and then build on to achieve something significant.” He noted.

We are in the era of progressive regime and effective energy industry management and era where we want to make sure energy becomes the engine of growth to trigger the growth of this economy,” he noted.

GRIDCo blames recent power outages on gas flow challenges

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) says gas flow challenges coupled with test performance operations by the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAGPCo) disrupted power supply to both commercial and domestic units on Monday, March 16, 2020.

A press statement release by GRIDCo and copied to GhanaWeb stated that, “some plants in the Aboadze enclave experienced gas flow challenges making them unable to generate power.”

It further explained that, a “scheduled performance test on a new regulating and metering gas station in Tema led to limited gas supply to power plants in the Tema enclave.”

The WAGPCo operations coupled with gas flow challenges resulted in prolonged power outages in parts of the country yesterday.

“Subsequently, the gas challenges were resolved, and power was restored to all affected bulk supply points on Tuesday, March 17, 2020,” GRIDCo noted.
