Legon Titans close in on Cosmos Buffaloes in Rugby 7s League

The Legon Titans are up and running, displaying a massive improvement in technique, discipline and overall play as the 2012 Ghana rugby 7s League gathers momentum.

Titans, team of the University of Ghana whose athletics’ oval is hosting the tournament, trailed leaders Cosmos Buffaloes by four points going into last Saturday’s Match Day 3 of 5th and 6th round of matches last Saturday.

However, the titans did very well, claiming the scalp of both Accra Sharks and Dansoman Hurricanes beating both 22-7 respectively. In the event, Titans have now amassed 18 points on a total of 95 tries in second place just a point behind the leading Buffaloes who have now made 116 tries.

The high level of improvement exhibited by the Titans has impressed most of all the President of the Ghana Rugby Association herself. Gifty Annan-Myers believes the University of Ghana’s recent participation in an international tournament for Universities in Morocco has greatly shaped their play.

“It’s wonderful how improved the Titans are playing and it again shows how important exposure to international competitions can be. They have played with good sides where the rules were applied without compromise and the result is the fantastic rugby we can see them playing here today,” Madam Annan-Myers told *SportsinGhana.com.*

Despite seeing their four point advantage whittled down to one, Cosmos Buffaloes remained unfazed as they march on in the quest to claim the ultimate trophy come end of the league next Match Day May 27. After outclassing Dansoman Hurricanes 21-0 in their opening game, Buffaloes dropped points for the first time when they were held to a 10-10 draw by Accra Warriors.

Warriors have by the feat moved 3rd on the log on 14 points having earlier dispatched Teshie Spartans 17-0. The Warriors have also now made 70 tries in total.

Also up to 4th are Idas Sports Rugby Club who recorded the highest win of the year, 33-0, over the Spartans after also earning a walkover the absent Ketu Lions. Idas have 11 points and total tries of 53, same as Dansoman Hurricanes who only gained seven tries but no point from their two defeats to Titans and Buffaloes and fall from 3rd to 5th.

Accra Sharks are still 6th but have gained three points more after earning a walkover Ketu Lions even though they lost their opening game to the Titans. On 6 points, Sharks now have 29 tries in total over their six games thus far.

Still rooted bottom are Ketu Lions and Teshie Spartans who have both yet to make a single try and both have a point each to show for their efforts thus far.

The final showdown that crowns the champion for the 2012 Rugby season has been set for Sunday May 27, 2012 at the Usual League Grounds of the Athletics oval, University of Ghana, Legon. *
