J.B Danquah murder trial: Suspect’s fate hangs

The fate of Daniel Asiedu, the suspect arrested for allegedly stabbing the late Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu at his residence is still hanging.

The prosecutors in the case will today prove to the Accra Magistrate Court whether the Attorney General has received the docket of the case.

If the docket has not reached the Attorney General for advice and direction, then it means Daniel Asiedu will continue to be in police custody and the committal will delay.

At the last adjourned date, an Accra Magistrate Court ordered the release of suspected killer of former Abuakwa North MP, Daniel Asiedu from the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

The lawyer for the accused, Augustine Obuor entered a plea for a change in the remand warrant to allow the accused to be released from BNI custody into police custody to allow family and friends have access to him.

The 19-year-old was arrested for allegedly stabbing the late Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu at his residence on February 9, 2016.

The suspect was subsequently charged with murder and arraigned before court and has been remanded in BNI custody since.

His lawyer has been pleading with the court to change his custody after he [Daniel Asiedu] complained of maltreatment at the cells.

Mr. Obuor argued that the family of the accused did not have access to him in BNI custody.

But the prosecutor maintains that keeping the suspect in BNI custody helps them to speed up their investigations. His release from BNI custody was granted by Judge Stephen Owusu after the prosecutor told the court, Tuesday, April 19 that the docket is yet to be submitted to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.

The prosecutor’s submission implied that they are done with the investigation and there was no need in keeping the suspect in BNI custody.

The case was adjourned to May 4, 2016.
