Residents of Kwesimintsim, a suburb of Takoradi in the Western Region are still trying to come to terms with what would provoke a son to butcher his mother and attempt to do same to his sister.
On Friday, October 4, 2019 around 9.30am, some neighbours of the family narrate they saw the woman, Precious Acolatse, also known as Daavi, in her 70s, screaming and rushing out of her room followed closely by her son, Samuel Ameakua, popularly known as Mawuli.
He was wielding a machete and continually struck at the mother. The mother who was bleeding, shortly collapsed and died.
“Mawuli looked very furious and was still cutting up the mother as he run after her”, a neighbour recalled.
Mawuli, a taxi driver, who is said to be in his mid-twenties then allegedly turned to his elder sister, whose name was given only as Caro for trying to stop him when he was “dealing” with their mom.
Caro, a seamstress by profession, however got away with a few cuts as some neighbours went to her rescue.
She was then rushed to the Emergency Unit of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital for medical attention whilst the remains of the mother was deposited at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital Morgue.
Mawuli is now in the custody of the Kwesimintsim Police Command. District Police Commander, DSP Aidoo who confirms the incident says his outfit has started with its investigations.
Meanwhile, some colleague taxi drivers of Mawuli believe he may be under some spell in what they describe as “evil spirit attacks”. According to them, he behaves strangely at times.
“We believe strongly he is sometimes possessed by some evil spirit which causes him to do awkward things, so we suspect that this can be linked to the evil spirit”, one stated.
