The Police at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region have commenced investigations into the circumstances that led to the escape of three persons on remand at the Nsuta Police cell Saturday night.
A fourth person was shot dead by the Police officer on duty during the escape incident.
According to the Police, the four persons were said to have requested for water in the late hours of Saturday to flush a water closet toilet, which had no direct water supply.
The inmates allegedly grabbed the officer on duty and attempted to strangle him to death.
“The inmates requested for water to flush the toilet and as I went in to help them with the water, they tried capturing me with the intention of strangling me to death” the officer on duty who gave his name as Officer Agogo, narrated to TV3 Sunday.
“During the struggle, I managed to reach out to my pistol and I shot at one of them,” he said, adding, “The three others managed to bolt away sensing danger”.
District Police commander Supt. George Afari Yeboah explained that the police have sent out information to all police points within and outside the region to help re-arrest the escapees.
“Three out of the four attempted escapees were part of a 7 member team arrested in Yeji for stealing 17 cows. Four out of the 7 met bail requirements leaving the three who were remanded and are to appear before a court this week. The fourth person who is a resident of Nsuta was arrested for stealing 11 bunches of plantain” the Commander told TV3 Sunday.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Holy Family Hospital morgue.
