Nana Asihene laments how some musicians stalled his documentary on Ghanaian music

Ghanaian filmmaker Nana Asihene shared challenges he faced while producing a documentary on Ghanaian music, revealing that some respondents demanded payment before participating.

In a Facebook post, he noted similar difficulties with a sports documentary, adding he might resort to featuring foreign personalities due to the lack of local collaboration.

Despite these setbacks, he vowed to persist and criticized the "selfish" attitudes of some Ghanaians.

Filmmaker David Nicole-Dey echoed Asihene’s concerns, recounting his own failed attempt at documenting Ghana’s music scene, which cost him over 2 million Ghana cedis.

Both highlight systemic issues, including funding constraints and a lack of cooperation, which hinder storytelling in Ghana’s cultural and creative sectors.

Many believe such challenges are why the country lacks authentic, industry-focused documentaries.
