Police assault on woman shocking – Irene Logan

Singer and song writer, Irene Logan, has described as shocking the Police brutality on a female customer of the Midland Savings and Loans Company Limited.

The brutality was meted out to the customer with a baby by Frederick Amanor Skalla, a Police Officer at the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans.

Reacting to the news, Irene Logan in a tweet said: “That video shook me. But reason why I haven’t commented much? ... I see the hypocrisy in most submissions about the issue. If she was a well-dressed, eloquent young woman in the very same situation. what would have been your sympathy level.”

She added : “A few months ago, @lydiaforson was also assaulted by a security (male) figure and he threatened to slap her and he actually got physical with her. Many of you on here said she deserved it.! What’s the difference here?”

Meanwhile President Nana Akufo-Addo has condemned the conduct of the policeman adding he supports any punitive measures by Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, against the culprit.

The victim, Patience Safo, was ruthlessly assaulted by Frederick Amanor also known as Skalla, while holding a baby.

She had insisted on withdrawing a sum of GHS270 from the facility as her previous attempts to withdraw the money days back had failed due to a network challenge.

The officer who was servicing as a security at the financial institution was called to escort her out but ended up beating her in the process.

Commenting on the development on Saturday, 21 July 2018, Mr Akufo-Addo said : “Yesterday, we had some very bad news in Accra – police beating up a woman who had gone to get money at the Midland Loans and Savings Company. I want to say here: policemen are meant to protect citizens and not to assault citizens.”

“The measures that the IGP has taken to sanction the erring policeman and to make sure these don’t happen again, have my complete support. I support 100 percent the measures he has taken so that we can stop these incidents from proliferating,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo made the remark at Nalerigu at the palace of the Overlord of Mamprugu, during his tour of the northern part of the country.
