Columnist: Concerned Parent
I write as a parent who is confused about certain happenings in my child’s school. The school is ADISADEL COLLEGE. Barely two years ago we were told at a PTA meeting organized by the school that the Headmaster had incurred some debt amounting to One billion old Ghana Cedis during the previous term so we were asked to pay up for that by three installments. For the three terms that my ward was in form (one) we were compelled to pay for the so-called debts that we knew nothing about. We paid five hundred Ghana Cedis each term for the three terms. Last term’s bill again has some extra monies we are going to pay. We parents are suffering; the headmasters should have mercy on us. I have some few questions for the school authorities, the PTA and the Board of Governors i.e. if the school has one at all.
a) How can a school like Adisadel College incur such a huge debt within a term?
b) Did the PTA and the School’s Board find out why such outrageous debt was incurred?
c) Why is it that since then the PTA has not held any other meeting to give us a feedback?
The other issue I have with the school also has to do with money. Madam Minister of Education, is it your ministries’ policy that students who break school rules are made to sign a so-called bond by paying fifty Ghana cedis? This is what is happening in Adisadel College and yet this is a school that is supposed to be one of the best in the country. Is this not naked robbery? I ask again, does the school have a Board?
Madam Minister, these are my major problems with this school. It is my firm belief that the PTA and the school’s Board have come together to harass we the parents. Your ministry should do something about this canker.
