Atta Mills: I'm Still Your President

Several days ago, professor Atta Mills was quoted as saying that Ghanaians ought to shut up. In fact, many Ghanaians have been complaining about the slowness, in which the Mills administration has been progressing thus far. Indeed, this presumed statement by the sitting president has annoyed many people. Ghanaians all over the world feel disrespected by this presumed statement by their president. Anyway, whether the president said it or not, the media has taken this presumed statement and gone wild with it. On a personal note, I don't believe that the president did ever say such a thing. In my opinion, the president is too sophisticated and mature for such a statement. He knows very well that the good people of Ghana, who elected him to office are not stupid. Moreover, he understands too well what's expected of him, and what isn't expected of him.

That said, I cannot for the life in me understand, why Ghanaians would put so much pressure on this virgin NDC government to deliver on their electoral promises so soon. This government has been in business for less than a year, and already Ghanaians are calling for profit. For eight long and fruitless years, Ghanaians watched the NPP government take this country for a ride. Nobody even bothered to raise his/her finger either in protest or objection, when former president Kufour and his kleptomaniac friends were busy sodomizing the country. Rawlings was perhaps the only person who dared voice out his contempt. But even then, the NPP controlled media jumped on him like he was Ghana's number one enemy. The now defunct NPP government brainwashed Ghanaians to believe that the country was on course to great things, when the opposite was true. They used words like robust, resilient and stable to describe the state of our economy, when in fact the economy was already sinking. And what did we do? We foolishly believed them.

They told us that re-denominating the currency would make the economy better. Now, did the re-denomination make the economy better? They even went so far to tell us that the re-denomination would stabilize the Cedi. Did it indeed stabilize the Cedi? They told us that they have successfully managed to increase our GDP from $ 3.94 billion to $16.1 billion. And I say to them well done. But where is the money? I ask. Could you all believe that with all these monies coming into the treasury, the Mills administration inherited a budget deficit of $1.5 billion? Meaning, Ghana did spend more than it made without even saving a Pesewa. In business, such an over-expenditure would be considered reckless. Then again, it's recklessness as a result of thoughtlessness by a government, which absolutely had no experience in how to do business on a grand scale-let alone save. What is the meaning of all of this? you ask. Well, it means that the NPP government left Ghana bankrupt. Hence, the World Bank and the IMF to the rescue.

In short, this NDC government inherited a bankrupt country as a result of a seriously mismanaged economy. It would certainly take sometime to get the economy up and running again. Therefore, Ghanaians should be warned not to allow haste to overcome them. Because after all, the NDC signed a four year contract with the country. For those who wouldn't exercise patience, I would suggest that they leave the country. They should be free to go. We have had enough of their nonsense and constant whining. As for now, the NDC is the only party in town. And Atta Mills is still the president of Ghana whether some of you like it or not.
