COVID-19: an open letter to John Mahama on his exemplary leadership

John Dramani Mahama John Dramani Mahama

Your Excellency,

If there is any opposition Party across the globe that has conducted itself well and has stand out as government in waiting, it is the NDC. You, the National Executives and all those working behind the scenes to put the party in this glittering light deserve commendation.

Not only have you and the Party demonstrated that we have what it takes to manage this country, you have also proven that we have capable hands to handle any situation. I think God probably in his own wisdom, decided to provide a platform for Ghanaians to assess you and Akufo Addo when it comes to disaster management.

Ghanaians have now been given opportunity to judge between how you handled Ebola and how Akufo Addo is handling COVID-19. Unlike Akufo Addo who was in his usual belligerent best when you were battling to prevent Ebola from entering Ghana, you are offering practical recommendations and solution to this government to lift us from the doldrums. Not only that, you have assembled team of experts to help governement fight this pandemic. Also, we have seen you distributing PPEs to hospitals and food to the less privileged at a time when government has been lackluster in dealing with the crisis.

It is now apparent that Ghanaians voted out a fortune to elect Akufo Addo to lead us. And it is now clear that the flagbearer of the largest opposition Party in Ghana and his team are doing well regarding being ahead of government.

Your Excellency, the proactivity is highly commendable, but there is more to do. Because a lot of people spend their time on social media (Facebook and Twitter), these extraordinary times present a very fine opportunity for the NDC to market their highly successful achievement in the health sector.

Your Excellency, humbly, you can speak a good number of languages. Let us productively milk this soft skill to our people. Let us do short videos in the languages you command and push it to the people. I mean educational videos on COVID-19. The live Facebook interaction is great, except my father in Sunyani cannot access Facebook and Twitter unless traditional media. We might have dominated social media as the NPP used in 2016, but we should not forger majority of our voters are in the hinterlands and for matter the rural areas. How do we reach out to these people?

As a Party youth, it suffices to also say that one of the things that we need to be proud of is that the national youth leaders and other executives were visibly seen helping to distribute food to the less privileged. Did we see the national youth Organizer of the NPP engaged our national youth leader when NDC was fighting tooth and nail to prevent Ebola from entering Ghana? Nothing close to that happened. Sammy Awuku was always in the media criticizing your efforts.

From constituency to national, we have done well and I am convinced that Ghanaians have seen and appreciate your kind gestures and effort. Yes, we are not out of the woods yet but so far so good. Your constant broadcast laden with practical solutions to the challenges we are faced with is a master stroke.

To end here, I would like to quote from Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declare the Lord, “plans to prosper you not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Your Excellency, take hark; know that there is a reward for every good thing.

May God bless us all and make our nation greater and stronger.
Yours in the struggle for a better and prosperous Ghana.
