Columnist: The Royal Enoch

Dr Kwame Nkrumah Was Here

I must have been too young to remember
But they said that you were here
Filling in the gaps left between our spaces
Restoring the hope once deserted from our faces
Treading on a selfless path reserved for martyrs
Not knowing when the wind would blow
Why did you do what you did
What compelled you to stand up to Goliath
What did you see in us--Dr kwame Nkrumah
Which we still don't see in ourselves

Memories of you are on our blood stained walls
Which the morning rains have left unwashed
They remind me that you were here
That you once trod this sacred land
Which these orphans of wealth call their own
Only to be disowned by your own
How did it feel when they sold you out
When the carpet was pulled from under your feet
You were sent crashing to the floor
Whilst angels watched and wept from heaven's door

A bright candle light in the face of darkness
They said that you shone brightly
A mortal man with the wings of Pegasus
How golden your feathers must have been
Our Prince
How could they not have seen
What were you trying to tell us--Dr Nkrumah
What were you trying to say
How come that we didn't listen
And would we ever

I go in search of a house--which you may have built
But they tell me that you had none of your own
It seems that you gave all of yourself
Only to receive your less
For a moment we had you
The next you were gone
For a moment you were here
Now--emptiness is all that remains
Indeed--a great man once walked in our midst
Even if it was brief
