Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me space in your media to air this illegal behavior of the authorities of Dome market with specific reference to Tailors and Dressmakers Association in the Market.
There is yet to be an illegal collection of money from tailors and dress makers in the market by their authorities(Tailors and Dressmakers Association) of Dome market located near St. John's School Junction, Achimota, Accra. This is not the first of its kind, however my complain is to make known the worries and pains tailors and dressmakers working in the market go through. The most recent of such illegal attempt of money collection was on Tuesday, 4th May, 2010 where all tailors and dressmakers were summoned by their association heads for a meeting only to be told that, each person is to pay GHC40.00 towards building of the Dome market which will upon completion will be rented out to them again. Who knows some people have started paying the said amount. Again who knows other association heads also apply same or similar money extortions to trader them.
Let not forget, no one working in the market had the place for free, they had to rent it. Is sounds very odd when governments over the years do their possible best and making all effort to put up standard and acceptable markets for traders all over the country, authorities of the market also find canning ways to extort money from traders. Aside these, money is heavily taken from traders who are thought to have gone against the laws of the market. That is not to say law breakers should go unpunished but the extent of money taken from them for the offence is what matters at the end of the day because money meant to put food on the table for the family is gone into some peoples' pockets easily, freely and cheaply. I am therefore appealing to AMA and other superior bodies to investigate this a put the authorities of the market to order.
Samuel Wunu.
