Let’s rise above political deception in our education sector

In August 2019, I was at Tahiru Kura in the Oti Region and saw this school. I felt really sad... Three years on, the condition of basic schools in the Oti region has not improved.

Whilst there, I sought to find out by asking how we can guarantee a prosperous future for such children? This question remains as relevant today as it was the first time I asked.

It appears to me that in the last 5 years, this government has completely ignored basic schools: no funding, no infrastructure, and no quality personnel at the basic level. Insistence on an additional examination of Teachers for the purposes of licensing them is obviously not the most critical need in basic schools today. Basic schools need adequate funding and infrastructure.

We still have many schools even in our capital city, without adequate desks and good learning environments.

It is obvious that when it comes to education generally and more particularly basic education, this government has been most insensitive.

There is a need for deliberate intervention to improve basic schools across the country and more particularly, basic schools in rural areas such as the Oti Region in order to secure the collective future of these children.

Looking at the current state of some rural schools in the country, there is no doubt that we are doing the children of Ghana more harm than good.

Free SHS is good but Free SHS alone is not a panacea to the problems of Education in Ghana. Children need a good foundation in order to fully benefit from the FSHS policy.

In the absence of adequate funding and infrastructure in basic schools, the future of Ghana's Education will be in tatters.
