As Moderator of GLU it is my sad duty to report this news after an extensive interview with Mr. Jacob Osei Yeboah.

For the man who is supporter of Chieftaincy, the son of an Ashanti Chief whose father passed recently, and a man who wants to incorporate chieftaincy into the way Ghana runs our nation, this is a shocker! Jacob was attacked by men in the presence of the Asantehene at the Manshia palace.

There is a school of thought that suggest that no law will stand against Asante laws, and some even say that in Kumasi nobody dare speak evil let alone resist if being beaten up by the guards of Asantehene. This is the level of loyalty and revelry the people of Asante have of their chief. A few years ago one TV news man and reporter who was alleged to have said critical things about the Asantehene was assassinated and the law has not to date conducted any full and successful investigation.

This is surely news and GLU wants to find out if this law suit will be a test case of our modern state laws against the laws existing in the Asante palace. An effort to restore chieftaincy as part of the modern management is jeopardy if this case does not get resolved. There is no public figure who has in recent times spoken so much in favor of and defended chieftaincy as Mr. Jacob Osei Yeboah. For this to happen to him is wake up call for national discussion on the relevance of having this dual power system in Ghana.

An independent presidential aspirant for next year’s general elections, Mr Jacob Osei Yeboah, has threatened a court action against Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and three of his body guards.
He is accusing the Asantehene of looking on unconcerned while the three guards assaulted him at the Manhyia palace in Kumasi last Monday.
“I had expected that the Asantehene would call his guards to order while they severely assaulted me in his full glare but he turned a blind eye to their action. I want to prove to him ( Otumfuo) that no one is above the law in this country; we are in an era of rule of law not rule of the will of men,” he told The Finder on Tuesday at the Manhyia Divisional Police headquarters where he had lodged a complaint.
He said that he and his followers were at the Manhyia Palace on Monday because of a land case that was pending before the Asantehene’s court when the assault took place.
Mr. Yeboah, an Accra-based businessman, claimed that some of his followers wanted to engage the body guards in a scuffle but he restrained them for the sake of peace and also because he did not want to soil his image ahead of next year’s elections.
“I am an aspiring presidential candidate hoping to become the next president of this country, I restrained my men but I intend to go to court over the issue for the laws of the land to reign supreme,” he said.
When contacted, an official at the Manhyia police headquarters, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the case.
He said Mr. Yeboah had reported a case of assault but he withheld further comments because investigations were ongoing.
The Public Relations Officer of Manhyia Palace, Mr. Osei Antwi, said he heard the matter for the first time on a local radio station but declined further comments because he had not been properly briefed by his superiors.
