The Blind Pass: A weekly feature on the Ghana Premier League - Invincibility Breached

WAFA SC beat Hearts of Oak in Sogakope. WAFA SC beat Hearts of Oak in Sogakope.

The league returned after a 10 day break with further twists in the plot. There were major changes on the log as the league zooms steadily into it’s final lap.

It was embarrasssment complete in 30 minutes as West Africa Football Academy dispatched Hearts of Oak early on in the week 23 opener on saturday. The 3-0 humbling saw Hearts of Oak relinquishing topspot at the end of week 23. Wa All Stars took full advantage of Hearts’ slump as they beat Bechem United 2-0 to secure top spot. Aduana Stars fell to Sekondi Hasaacas in a closely contested clash at the Essipong stadium which ended 2-1.

In form Ebusua Dwarfs added Techiman City FC to their list of victims as they went, saw and conquered in Techiman to inflict on the homesters their first ever defeat in the topflight. The game which ended 1-0 has shot Dwarfs to 9th and 3 points off the drop zone. Asante Kotoko laboured to a 1-0 victory against Dreams FC through an Amos Frimpong penalty at the Baba Yara stadium. Their first win in as many games eases the pressure on under fire stop gap coach Michael Osei. New Edubiase United’s quest to avoid the drop is proving to be a daunting one as they found themselves on the losing side yet again in the Adansi derby against Ashanti Gold SC. Their 2-0 defeat leaves them rooted at the sole of the log, 5 points adrift safety.

Inter Allies and Medeama SC shared the spoils in their game at the Tema park. Berekum Chelsea came back from a goal down to draw level at home against Liberty Professionals.

INVINCIBILITY BREACHED..

Two notable runs were halted at the close of match week 23. Before the start of the weekend’s games three teams had an enviable accolade of having come thus far without a single defeat playing at home and for one of them away from home in an impressive fashion.

It took West Africa football Academy only 30 minutes to soil Hearts’ impressive clean slate away from home.Hearts were still reeling in what had hit them at 2-0 down in a little over 20 minutes when the final nail was put in their coffin by man-of-the-match Komlan Agbenadian. A sucker punch with the propensity to derail morale of any entity and rightly so a possible dent in Hearts’ charge on league triumph. A really tall order for a team with no defeat on the road to pick up the pieces after such a humbling. Interesting times to come as the tale unfolds.

Techiman City Football Club is another team which held their own and made their home ground a fortress up until in recent games. A recent unimpressive string of draws was an indication of the near demise of their home invincibility and it was only a matter of time before time is called on their clean run at home. In form Ebusua Dwarfs were on hand to hand Techiman City FC their first home defeat in the top flight. The sudden home blip has seen Techiman city drop on the log and flirting with relegation with only 3 points away from the drop zone.

Wa All Stars however is the only one amongst the three to keep its run going and have in the process gazumped Hearts of Oak for the top spot. They are yet to go a home game without at least a point all season. With the invincibility of their direct title rivals breached and the possible league decider to be played at the Wa park, Is the title a forgone conclusion? Will Hearts of Oak upset the applecart and breach the the Wa invincibility in arguably the most important game to be played at the ground yet?

The Ghana premier league provides all the answers in the next few weeks. Stay tune!
