Unemployment in Ghana will double in 2013

I am writing this to awake all Ghanaians who have something to do to solve this growing social problem ( of unemployment ) to do so now. We all know that " a hungry man is an angry man" so the earlier we find solution to it, the better.

Not quite long, I wrote about unemployment in this country Ghana and I blamed bad governance. Unfortunately, I did not get enough time to edit the writing very well but I think those who came across some errors have pardonned me for that.

The issue touched some people and applauded the writer but others also stood against it and I believe this is how we should argue to draw our own conclusions on issues.

There are some signs on the wall showing that unemployment in Ghana is going to double in 2013 and it will cause a lot of social problems like armed robbery, corruption, raping, teenage pregnancies, hard drugs peddling, prostitution, sickness and also bring unexpected circumstances such as suicides into the system if President Mills government does not rescind the decision of returning SSS or SHS to three years.

Our country began to experience unemployment when P/NDC government, led by former President Rawlings, fully implemented JSS and SSS education policy in the early 90s.

JSS educational idea was brought in by the late Dr Busia and it was on experimental basis to examine how the system would function, but unfortunately Dr Busia did not finish his term and he was removed by military coup d'etat.

Though the architects of JSS/SSS educational policy did not finish their work and it was revisited by President Rawlings Administration.

P/NDC government fixed a date for phasing out the old system of education in order to pave way for full implementation of JSS/SSS policy.

Before implementing JSS and SSS policy, P/NDC government had planned to divest state-owned enterprises so the two policies met at the same time.

What I know is that before any strategy can work effectively to achieve its objectives, there should be adequate resources putting in place so at the end of the day the results will be measurable but this did not happen during the implementation of JSS/SSS policy and it was from there unemployment problem began.

The following reasons confirm the fact:

1. The number of years we supposed to stay in schools were reduced at elementary and secondary school levels by one and two years respectively.

2. We spent only three years at secondary school instead of five and two years at "A"level before entering university.

3. Within six years, more SSS students graduated to enter university direct after cutting off four years.

4. The number of people who were going on pension in that period did not increase to give way for incoming graduates and the government did not make any provisions for jobs to occupy the SSS and university graduates who were entering the system.

5 In the same period, the government was divesting state- owned companies so over 300 state-owned companies well sold but not all of the companies were able to refurbish for operations again.

When NPP government took over power in 2001, they realized the problem and decided to add one year to the secondary school studies to be four instead of three years.

The aim was not only to prepare SSS graduates very well for job markets but also to remove unemployment from the system entirely.

Unfortunately, the same P/NDC government that did not make provision for jobs before implementing the JSS/SSS policy and as a result of that unemployment has become incurrable disease among Ghanaians, has firmly decided to return SSS or SHS to three years again after winning the 2008 elections.

In 2013, the (last) four year SSS or SHS students: (the policy introduced by NPP government) will be writing their final exams but they will be writing with those who will be in the third year because, President Mills government has authorized educational ministry to do so.

Automatically, the number of secondary school graduates will double in 2013.

What do you think to be happening in the country after the graduation of these SSS or SHS students in 2013 if the government of the day does not rescind that decision?

Please, I have predicted what would happen and what about you?.

God bless Ghana.
