Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, Minister of Health, has attributed the delays in reconstructing the La General Hospital to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
According to Dr. Okoe-Boye, the DDEP caused financial institutions to withdraw during the global financial crisis, affecting the project’s funding.
However, he announced that the construction is now underway, funded by taxpayers’ money, at a cost of €50 million.
This comes in response to protests from residents of La and surrounding areas over the prolonged delay since the hospital's demolition in 2020.
