Prof. Joel Yarney, an Oncology and Radiotherapy Consultant at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has advised men to prepare mentally for the reality of prostate cancer as they age, noting it is unavoidable but manageable with early detection.
Speaking at a prostate cancer awareness event organized by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) as part of its 60th anniversary, Prof. Yarney highlighted that black men over 40, especially those with a family history, are at higher risk.
He called on the government to invest in a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) machine to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Other experts emphasized the need for regular screenings and proposed including cancer treatments under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The Ministry of Health has initiated policies to improve cancer care and promote early detection nationwide.
