Upper West records 37 Meningitis deaths

Four more persons have been killed after suffering meningitis related symptoms in Ghana’s Upper West Region.

This brings the number of deaths recorded in the region to 33 with 247 cases, Accra-based Citi FM reported.

Health officials in the Upper West Region identified the Nadowli/Kaleo district and the Nandom municipality as the hardest-hit areas.

The Nadowli District recorded 74 cases with 12 deaths while the Nandom Municipality also has 76 cases with 10 fatalities.

The Jirapa Municipality follows with 42 cases, out of which nine people died.

Four districts namely the Wa East, Sissala West, Lambusie and Dafiama-Bussie-Issah, however has not recorded any case.

Ghana currently is in a desperate bid to stop the Covid-19 pandemic which has overshadowed other deadly infections especially in the Northern regions.

The country’s Parliament at a recent sitting prompted the Ministry of Health to give some attention to the growing number of cases of Meningitis in the country.

The Ashanti Region for instance has recorded three deaths.
