Multistix Surrender Areeba S-League Title to NDK

NDK Financiers confirmed their superiority over Multistix in the 2006-2007 Areeba S-Hockey League with a 1-0 win in the final day of matches. NDK, who beat Multistix 6-1 on the first day of competition, completed the double over their rivals in a nerve racking match that produced a lot of exciting moments in the 70 minute thriller.

Multistix started the match 3 points and with a goal difference of 1 ahead of NDK and only needed a draw to retain the title they won last season. It was however NDK who put in everything including recruiting some younger players to strengthen their team who dominated proceedings from the start. Indeed, for the first time, they played their most experienced player Oko-Nikoi Dzani on the bench throughout the game.

In a match in which man-of-the-match Captain Paa Kwesi Baffoe-Bonnie (Bumpy) of Multistix kept the swift attack of NDK made up of Attipoe and Dupleix at bay, the Multi forward-line led by Eric Dada Mainoo failed to guarantee them the title as they created and messed up countless chances.

The match remained an exciting ding-dong affair until three minutes from the end when the tired defence of Multi finally surrendered to the raids of the more youthful NDK. A seemingly harmless pass was misjudged by Richard Akpokavie for an NDK forward to capitalize on and sweep a shot across the face of the goal for an emphatic finish that left Multi keeper Gavivina Tamakloe sprawling. It took some six minutes of medical attention to bring him back on his feet to continue the game.

At the blast of the final whistle the entire Multi team stared in disbelief as the NDK team celebrated their hard won victory and the title.

In the other S-league match, Citizens confirmed their superiority over Veterans with a 4-2 walloping. Citizens placed third on the log.

In the A-league, Trustees beat Africa Club Championship debutants Marine Stick 4-2 in a thriller while Exchequers and Golden Sticks settled for a 0-0 draw in a rather dull game. The results put Trustees in second position behind Golden Sticks with one round of matches to complete the group stages. In accordance with the decision taken during the Association’s AGM, after the round of group matches, the 2 top teams will clash to determine the champions for the 2006-2007 season.
