Daniel Amartey is a professional Ghanaian footballer. He plays as a defender and midfielder for the Premier League club Leicester City as well as the Ghanaian national team.
His career in football started at the age of 16. He was discovered by Magnus Pehrsson who was on a scouting trip in Africa while he was preparing to be the manager of Djurgårdens IF. Daniel was playing for the second-tier club International Allies in Ghana at the time.
Pehrsson secured transfer rights for Daniel when he turned 18. The club allowed him to play for short periods of time for the club's U21 team in 2011 and 2012 to prepare him to move permanently to Sweden.
In 2013, he made a debut on 3 March 2013 against Umeå FC, and on 31 March, made his league debut in the 2013 Allsvenskan opening game away against Helsingborgs IF. Foreign clubs like FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern started to scout him because of his great performance.
Daniel Amartey scored his first goal on 26 May for the club in a 1–1 equalizer, in the 2013 Svenska Cupen Final. He was ranked as the 10th-best player in the league by the newspaper Expressen and 18th-best by Aftonbladet after his first season in the Swedish league as an eighteen-year-old.
He move to F.C. Copenhagen for a fee of €2.5 million and some add-on in July 2014 and then made his debut at the Superliga in a match against Silkeborg IF.
Daniel Amatey also joined Premier League side Leicester City on 22 January 2016, on a four-and-a-half-year contract for a fee of up to £6 million. He featured five times because his team won the Premier League title.
On 27 February 2016, he made a debut for his club in a 1–0 win over Norwich City at the King Power Stadium.
Following the departure of N'Golo Kanté in the 2016–17 season, Daniel Amartey became a first-team regular.
On December 17, 2016, he scored his first goal for Leicester in the 88th-minute equalizer away at Stoke City in a 2–2 draw. Just 12 hours after returning to Leicester from international duty on 8 February 2017, he played for 120 minutes in a 3–1 FA Cup fourth-round replay win over Derby County.
He suffered an ankle injury in October 2018 in a game against West Ham United. This ruled him out for the rest of the 2018–19 season.
Out of action for nearly a year, Daniel Amartey made the bench for an EFL Cup match against Luton Town in September 2019.
He resumed playing for his after two years on 23 September 2020 in which his team, Leicester lost 2–0. He played in the Premier League four days later and Manchester City had a 5–2 win. International career
In May 2012 Amartey made his debut for the Ghana national under-20 football team in a game against Nigeria. He was also selected to play in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup but Djurgården wanted to keep him in Sweden since the tournament clashed with the 2013 Allsvenskan season.
In January 2015, Amartey played in all the group matches for Ghana at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars finished as runners-up.
He played six times at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, lasting 90 minutes in every match to help Ghana finish fourth in the tournament. His performances saw him named in the CAF Team of the tournament.
