AG defends MPs’ right to retain seats amid independent candidacy

Attorney General Godfred Dame has submitted a statement in a Supreme Court case challenging Speaker Alban Bagbin's decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

The case arises from MPs planning to run as independent candidates in the December 2024 elections.

Dame argued that merely filing nominations does not disqualify MPs from their current seats, asserting they can only vacate if they switch parties or officially declare independence.

The Supreme Court has temporarily stayed Bagbin's ruling.

Meanwhile, Speaker Bagbin adjourned Parliament indefinitely due to a lack of quorum, while the Minority caucus claims to still be the majority.
