Akufo-Addo announces intention to contest 2020 elections

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced his intention to seek re-election on the tickets of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2020 general elections.

The president made this known while addressing a rally at the Accra International Trade Fair Centre on Sunday, December 22 2019.

Read full articlegave us 4 years, we’re left with one more year and people think we’ve already spent eight years in power but they’re lying. We’ll vigorously continue all the good work we’ve begun. Now I’d like to plead with all of you that as the elections approach, give me four more years to complete the amazing work my government has started.”

The president’s announcement flies in the face of critics who had earlier opposed speculations of the president seeking to be re-elected.

Such critics include Hassan Ayariga, Blakk Rasta and several others. In their opinion, the president who is now 75 years is too old to be re-elected as president.

But the president who thinks otherwise further expressed his optimism in returning to the Jubilee House on January 1, 2021. He predicted a massive win for his party in the 2020 Presidential elections as a result of the solid foundation he’s laid for the growth and development of the country in the past three years.

The rally was preceded by the party's Annual National Delegates’ Conference on the theme, “We have performed better, four more to do more” featured the party’s constituency, regional and national officers.

Over 6,500 delegates across the 16 regions attended the conference which also provided the platform for deliberations on issues of the party’s interest going into the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
