Galamsey: Leaders reluctant to act decisively due to election concerns – Osae-Kwapong

Dr. John Osae-Kwapong, a political analyst and research fellow at CDD-Ghana, says Ghanaian leaders are hesitant to tackle illegal mining (galamsey) strongly due to political concerns, especially during election periods.

Speaking on The Big Issue, he noted that past leaders, including Presidents Kufuor, Mahama, and Akufo-Addo, have all attempted to address galamsey using security forces and alternative livelihood programs.

However, ahead of elections, politicians are cautious in addressing the issue to avoid losing voter support, despite recognizing the environmental damage caused by the practice.
