Majority Leader defends deferment of new AMERI deal

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says the agreement for the amendment of the AMERI deal has not been dealt with by parliament because the request for further information by parliament remains crucial.

The latest agreement was laid in parliament on Thursday to introduce a third party, Mytilineos International Trading company to take over the operations of the AMERI plant.

The government in the new agreement will pay Ameri $39 million while the new entity will also pay $52 million to Ameri on behalf of the government of Ghana.

According to documents sighted by Kasapafmonline.com government says it will make a savings of 405 million dollars to the state in the new deal.

The minority and industry stakeholders have raised some concerns about the deal.

However, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the deal has been deferred for a closer look at the agreement saying the House needs to “interrogate the figures to know that what we are doing is in the best interest of the country, which explains why [the debate on the deal has been delayed].”

“I spoke to the Finance Minister, I spoke to the Attorney General plus the Minister of Energy and we all decided to tarry a while and have a closer look at it,” the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs said.
