NPP working for my defeat but I’m unfazed – Asiedu Nketia claims

General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been working against his candidature with the view to getting him to lose his position because the NPP sees him as a threat and “a nuisance”.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia who is seeking to retain his position in the NDC in Saturday’s National Delegates Congress at the Accra International Trades Fair Centre claimed in an exclusive interview with TV3 Wednesday that some members of his own party have taken money from the NPP to work out his defeat.

“The NPP has interest in our party as well as our congress because they see me to be a nuisance to them; the NPP wish me out from my party, then they will have no problem with the NDC,” Mr. Asiedu Nketia alleged.

He said it is against this backdrop that “they [NPP] are making much noise. Also, some of the NDC people have taken money from the NPP to talk against me”.

But he told TV3 he is unfazed by the plot to get him to lose his position, indicating he is optimistic of victory in Saturday’s congress.

The general secretary was speaking to TV3 on preparations towards the congress. About 9,000 delegates are expected to take part in the congress at which national executives will be elected to clear the way for the selection of a flag-bearer in December.

A final national executive committee meeting of the party was held Tuesday for the various committees within the party to present their reports ahead of the congress.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia assured party members and supporters of a peaceful and successful congress.
