Nana Oye Lithur to contest Adentan seat in 2020

Former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, will run for the 2020 Adentan seat on the ticket of the NDC, that is, if she is successful in winning her party’s primaries, ABC News Ghana can authoritatively confirm.

The Former Minister under the erstwhile Mahama administration on Good Morning Ghana Monday morning noted that as part of efforts to test the grounds for her next political adventure, she has started broad consultations to aid in this ambition.

“I am considering offering myself to serve as a parliamentary candidate for adentan for the NDC so I’ve started a lot of consultations…it’s all about the grassroots and our branches so I’m testing the grounds.. so its Adentan” she stated in the Metro TV interview closely monitored by ABC News Ghana.

The NPP’s Yaw Buaben Asamoah is the current occupant of the Adentan seat.

The Adentan Constituency has since its inception, remained a swing seat. It has, on a constant basis, moved from occupant to occupant since its creation in 2004. It has been popularly referred to political pundits as a ‘one-term’ constituency, stemming from the voting pattern of constituents who have never kept the same MP for more than a term.

Yaw Buaben Asamoah took over the seat from the NDC’s Ashie Moore who lost his party’s primaries prior to the 2016 elections. Ashie Moore had in 2012, also beaten then incumbent MP, Kojo Adu Asare in the party’s primaries ahead of the 2012 general elections.



Kojo Adu Asare, popularly referred to as the swagger man, had taken over the seat from the NPP’s Kwadwo Opare-Hammond in the 2008 elections after Mr. Opare-Hammond had served as the first Member of Parliament from the area from 2004 to 2008.

If the voting pattern is anything to go by, then Nana Oye Lithur may stand a chance provided she’s able to take down other several hopefuls in her party, including Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, brother of 2nd Lady Samira Bawumia.

Adamu Ramadan came extremely close to winning the Adentan seat in 2016 after toppling the incumbent Nii Ashie Moore in the NDC’s primaries. Mr. Ramadan is believed to be critically eyeing a redo of the political contest in 2020, ABC News Ghana can confirm.
