New Voters’ Register: You’ll be the biggest hypocrite if you register in April – NAPO to Mahama

Minister for Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh Minister for Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has said former President John Dramani Mahama will be fit to be described as Ghana’s biggest hypocrite if he turns out to be enrolled onto the new voters’ register in April.

He observed that the former President and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken an entrenched position against plans by the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters’ register.

In his view, the party has exhibited its hypocrisy to the highest level by openly kicking against the move but secretly lobbying members to go out and register if the EC announces a date.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Pure Fm’s ‘Pure Morning Drive’ with Kwame Adinkra monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the Minister challenged Mr. Mahama to go out and register against his own stance in concert with the other smaller parties and other interest groups.

“Mahama will be a big hypocrite if he turns up to register when the EC announces a date. They are the same persons kicking against it and secretly going round to persuade their supporters to go out and register ahead of the 2020 polls”, he said.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has set April 18, 2020, to compile a new voters’ register ahead of the December polls.

The decision has met fierce opposition from government critics, opposition political parties and some civil societies.

The EC, however, remains adamant on the decision and is hopeful that it will complete the exercise by May 30, 2020.

Ghana’s Parliament has approved the over GH¢390 million budget the Electoral Commission needs to compile the new voters’ register.
