Retaining ‘marketable’ Mahama as candidate in 2020 not a bad idea – Ofosu Ampofo

Newly elected Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo says it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the delegates of the party to retain John Mahama as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2020 general elections.

According to Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo, the move will help cut cost for the party while ensuring that the best possible candidate is put forward for the grilling contest in 2020.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo made this comment in an interview with Lexis Bill on Accra based Joy FM.

Responding to a question by the host on who he thinks will be the best possible candidate to lead the NDC into the 2020 elections, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo deferred judgement to the delegates saying whoever the delegates choose will be the best candidate for the party.

However, pushed further by the host on whether or not he agrees with pundits who say there is the need for a marketable candidate to lead the party Mr. Ofosu Ampofo averred that indeed a more marketable candidate as flagbearer will help the party in winning the next general elections.

He said in his view, former President John Dramani Mahama remains the most marketed candidate for the party at this opportune time.

“It is not a bad idea because when you are going for an election you are looking for the most marketable personality. It reduces your advertisement cost,” he said.

He added, “…he is a marketable personality. There is no doubt about that.”
