The Rotaract Clubs of Accra-Labone and the University of Ghana have organized the maiden “Women in Rotaract” summit under the theme “Empowering The Next Generation of Women to Pick Up Leadership Roles”.

The summit was organized for students of Labone Senior High School with the aim of mentoring young girls to develop their skills and take up leadership positions.

Speaking at the Summit in Accra last Tuesday, President of the Rotaract Club of Accra-Labone, Liana Abena Faamea said “Women empowerment can only be brought about when women are made aware of their rights. Most girls grow up to believe that they are inferior to boys. Young girls must be taught that they are no less than boys and can achieve anything if they are determined to do so.”

Ms. Faamea further stated that “this is a summit for all ladies in Rotaract and beyond. It is expected to be a summit to champion women empowerment by building our skills in leadership through training, master classes, summits and etc. And encourage more women to pick up leadership roles wherever they find themselves.”

According to her, it is really important for women to support one another because their experiences are similar across the world adding that “we need to acknowledge that we have a symbiotic relationship with our men and fellow women. We have to continue working together to make the world a better place.”

President of the Rotaract Club of University of Ghana, Mariam Success Musah on her part entreated the young girls not to be scared of venturing into the sciences because “it is not difficult as people say it and I can attest to that because I am undertaking a program under the science at the University of Ghana at the moment.”

The speakers at the event, Past Assistant Governor of Rotary District 9102, Theresa Osei Tutu, Bernice Sam, a Lawyer, and Gender Advocate and Albert Amekudzi, Past President of Rotaract Club of Accra-Labone charged the young girls to develop their skills and be courageous in taking up leadership positions.

The speakers, taking their turns during the panel discussion shared their experiences and challenges in taking up leadership positions. They thus urged the students to always stay focus on their goals.

Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18-30 to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service. In communities worldwide, Rotary and Rotaract members work side by side to take action through service.

From big cities to rural villages, Rotaract is changing communities. Rotaract clubs decide how to organize and run their club, manage their own funds, and plan and carry out activities and service projects aligned with causes that are important to your community.
