Rotary Ghana alumni association observes Global Handwashing Day

Rotary Ghana Alumni Association, an association of Rotary International, in conjunction with its Partners and Sponsors, commemorated "Global Handwashing Day" on Friday 15 October 2021 at Ashley Botwe, Adenta Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The theme, was “The future is at Hand-Let's move forward together”. There were poetry recitals by the Primary school children, choreography, and songs that displayed or showcased messages on handwashing and its benefits.

Global Handwashing Day, which is an annual global advocacy day, is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

Addressing the gathering, Miss Elorm Mary Addo, President of the Rotary Ghana Alumni Association stated that, Handwashing with soap and water is not only simple and inexpensive but also can dramatically reduce the number of young children who get sick and reduce absenteeism among school children.

She stressed the need for all to join in spreading the message about handwashing with soap and to demonstrate the value of clean hands.

She stated that the theme of the 2021 Global handwashing day highlights a great need for coordinated action towards universal hand hygiene as the world enters a "new normal" beyond COVID-19.

The association presented handwashing stations, handwashing soaps, hand Sanitizers, and other sanitary products worth GHs 5000 to the school as part of the celebrations.

The headmistress of Nii Sowah Din Memorial Primary 1 School, Mrs. Dorice Adu Gyamfi who received the items, on behalf of the school expressed her delight that the School was chosen for the celebration.

She expressed the school's appreciation to the members of the Rotary Ghana Alumni Association for supporting them with the donated items saying, it would boost the school’s sanitation activities.

“I wish to assure you that all the items donated would be put to good use and maintained properly,” the Headmistress said.

She appealed for more support for the school with regards to renovating the primary 1 and 2 classroom blocks.

The project was supported by SwanLad Limited, Yopoo Clean Company Limited, Makuline Clean Limited, and Josbrew Cleaning Enterprise.

The Association is made up of all persons that have participated in Rotary Sponsored programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Youth Exchange, Group exchange, Rotary Scholarships, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Peace Fellowship, etc.
