Tourism is a fast-rising sector in Ghana today. From our cuisine to our music and traditions, our culture is blooming into the international market quite promisingly.
According to the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance (OCTA), culinary tourism refers to “any tourism experience in which one learns about, appreciates, and/or consumes food and drink that reflects the local, regional, or national cuisine, heritage, culture, tradition or culinary techniques”.
Social media plays a role in driving the interest and enthusiasm in food experiences. Food tourism is predominantly popular among millennials, who share their food experiences on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
Food blogger Zubaida Abdel-Rahman has set out to create an impact on the hospitality and tourism industry, through food/culinary tourism. Through the use of her social media and website, she is fast becoming a household name in the food industry.
Her brand is built around convenience, where she not only reviews but simplifies the dining out and travel process as much as possible. Menus and recommendations are frequently updated, and via the use of a ZubzzBot, a WhatsApp chatbot, users are able to get on-demand recommendations.
The website is loaded with information concerning dining in Accra, video and written reviews, and a list of over 200 restaurant menus.
The menu page is perhaps the most useful to people who prefer to budget before an outing. She also works with brands and restaurants to improve their service and grow their customer base.
On Instagram and Twitter, food with its locations and prices are shared on a daily basis as a source of food inspiration.
