Bawumia votes for the creation of North-East Region in Walewale

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who is a registered voter in the Walewale Constituency of the Northern Region is expected to vote in the referendum for the creation of the proposed North-East Region.

Dr Bawumia’s polling station is at Kperiga Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS) where he has been voting since 2008.

But ahead of the exercise on Thursday December 27, 2018 he visited a number of churches in Walewale Township as well as interest groups to solicit their support in coming out in their numbers to vote for the creation of the new Region.

He also took the opportunity to preach religious tolerance and neighbourly love to ensure peace and holistic national development of the country.

East Mamprusi and West Mamprusi Municipalities, Yunyoo-Nasuan, Bunkpurugu- Nakpanduri, Mamprugu-Mohaduri and Cheriponi Districts make up the proposed North-East Region being championed by The Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II who months ago submitted a petition to His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, showing interest in the Mamprugu zone also being allocated a region.

This was again followed by a visit to meet the commission and explaining better why the petition should be given the necessary attention.

For the creation of a region to take effect, there would have to be at least a 50 percent voter turnout, and 80 percent of voters must vote ‘yes’.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled Thursday 27th of December for a referendum on the creation of some new regions in the country.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Jean Mensah, has assured Ghanaians that the necessary measures are being taken to ensure successful referendums for the creation of six regions.
