Effutu Assembly moves to promote better performance in BECE

Steps are being taken to invest more in the education sector to improve on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results in the Effutu Municipality.

Mr John Ninson, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who announced this at the Assembly’s Meeting at Winneba said the move would go a long way to create conducive environment for teaching and learning for students to concentrate more on their books and excel in the BECE.

To this end, the Assembly partnered the Effutu directorate of the Ghana education Service (GES) to address challenges such as shortage of textbooks, lack of furniture, toilet facilities and classroom blocks.

It was in this regard that it constructed a two-unit Kindergarten (KG) block with a restroom, an office, sanitary area and kitchen at Effutu Atieku, three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at UNIPRA South School, a library block at Effutu Ansaful and a 10- seater w/c biogas toilet at Ponkoekyir. The projects are being funded with the District Development and the Assembly's Common Funds.

Mr Ninson further stated that the Educational Committee had intensified supervision at all schools and would soon analyse their examination results and come out with a plan to address all challenges.

The MCE announced that Winneba Senior High School (SHS), which was the only Public SHS in the Municipality presented a total of 477 candidates in the 2018 West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and obtained 100 percent passes.

Mr. Joseph Ntsiful, Public Relations Officer of Effutu GES who briefed the house about the results of the 2018 BECE announced that 984 of the 1,427 candidates from 22 public and 22 private Junior High Schools in the Municipality representing 69.54%, passed.

He indicated that the good results were the outcome of the strategies and measures put in place, including; the Municipal Mock Examination for the candidates, Team Monitoring and supervision of activities in the various schools with support from the Effutu Assembly and Plan International-Ghana

The PRO thanked Plan International Ghana for sponsoring school performance appraisal meetings in selected communities and adopting some schools in the Municipality.

Mr. Alexzander Afenyo-Markin MP for Effutu also donated a number of furniture to schools in the area, gave bursaries to 27 teachers to further their education, donated over 200 laptops to teachers in the municipality and also sponsored the 2018 best teacher as his contribution to promote education in the Municipality.

Mr Ntsiful said a total of 1,525 candidates from 44 schools were expected to write the 2019 BECE and assured the house that with the strategies in place, the pupils’ performance this year would supersede that of 2018.
