A head-on collision by a Benz bus with registration number GR 7865-B and a rickshaw on the Enchi-Dadieso road in the Aowin constituency of the Western North Region has led to the death of a 50-year-old woman.
The deceased, Elizabeth Yaa Esuah, died on the spot and three persons who survived the accident are receiving medical attention at the Enchi government hospital.
Superintendent of Police Samuel Sando Latebu, District Police Commander for Enchi confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency.
He said around 1930 hours on Sunday, the Enchi Police Command had a distress call that a Mercedes Benz bus belonging to Great Ficab School located at Fanti Newtown, a suburb of Enchi was involved in an accident with a rickshaw on the Enchi Dadieso Highway.
Superintendent Latebu said when he led a team of policemen to the accident scene, preliminary investigations conducted revealed that the Mercedes Benz bus was journeying to Yakasi community near Enchi, while the rickshaw with registration number N-18-AS5963 was also travelling from the opposite direction veered into the lane of the Mercedes Benz bus and the driver in an attempt to avoid the crash rammed into the rickshaw.
Superintendent Latebu said Elizabeth died on the spot and the remaining three passengers who sustained injuries were sent to the Enchi government hospital for treatment and the deceased’s body was also deposited at the morgue awaiting autopsy.
The District Commander lamented the conduct of the rickshaw operators within the municipality as abysmal.
He warned that the police would deal with any rider or driver who violates the Road Traffic Act, adding that, "this is part of our strategy to ensure accident free before, during and after the Yuletide".
