Five deprived communities in the North East district of the newly created Savannah Region have been connected to the Rural Electrification Programme.
This is expected to positively impact on the socio-economic development of residents of Lantikpa, Kidengi, Tunga, Kanakulai and Kpalayili who have lived over decades without electricity.
The move is in line with government's desire to achieve universal access to electricity to enhance the role of rural communities in national development.
The North East District Chief Executive (DCE), Alhassan Abdullah Iddi at the inauguration anticipated that the latest development there could generate employment and improve local development.
This, in his estimation, might lead to poverty reduction.
According to him, the development was in fulfillment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo's campaign promise.
"This milestone is another fulfilled campaign pledge by President Nana Akufo Addo. The relevance and importance of the Rural Electrification Programme cannot be underestimated in the country and more especially a new area like the North East Gonja district."
“Let me vividly remind you that, it is the intention of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo to provide 100% coverage of the Rural Electrification Project.”
Abdullah Iddi emphasized that "Pupils can now learn under good conditions and pass successfully in their external examinations."
He cautioned them against illegal connections and stressed the need to be paying their bills regularly.
He reiterated government's pledge to improve the wellbeing of all citizens regardless of their geographical locations.
He commended the Chiefs for their support during the construction of the project.
He underscored the need for peaceful coexistence to attract investors.
"I urge our traditional rulers to always explore wisdom in the discharge of judgment in matters of conflicts that confront them in their respective traditional courts."
The Savannah Regional Minister, Salifu Adam Braimah observed that "the region has more communities not connected to the national grid than any other region in the country. But let me assure our people that the NPP government would ensure electricity penetration across Ghana."
He warned them to stop bush fires so as to safeguard the wooden electricity poles.
Salifu Braimah who doubles as the Salaga South Member of Parliament further admonished them to always conserve power.
Chiefs and residents of the beneficiary communities thanked President Nana Addo for liberating them from bondage.
