Fulani attacks: REGSEC directs GES to re-open Afram Plains schools

The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has recommended to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reopen schools in the troubled Afram Plains East district which were shut down following bloody clashes between farmers and Fulani nomads.

The REGSEC has, therefore, made the necessary security arrangement for the schools to be protected.

Schools in the affected communities have been closed down for more than a month now.

Teachers have abandoned posts while parents have also deserted the communities with their children bringing academic exercise to a halt. Out of the 9 academic weeks, school has been effective for only three (3) weeks in the area.

The 12 affected communities include Mpaemu, Dwerebrease, and Obonyam No 1&2, Asesseso, Derkokrom, Asumasu No 1&2, Atta-ne-Atta, Atuobikrom, Yaw tenkrom and Abotriansa.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Dafuor, who is the Chairman of REGSEC has asked the GES to recall the teachers for academic exercise to resume.

The Minister said this Monday when REGSEC visited the affected communities to assess the security situation.

According to the Minister, the 85-member contingent of Police personnel dispatched and positioned in the communities have restored calm, hence the need for residents to return and resume their economic activities while government takes steps to find a lasting solution to the menace.

The Kwahu East District Director of Education, Kwasi Boafo, said the situation is worrying and disruptive to teaching and learning.

He said based on the assurance by the Security Council, the schools will be reopened.

But the Assembly Member for Dwerebease one of the affected communities, Abdul Umar told Ultimate News, REGSEC should abide by the promise of providing security to the schools else no teacher will teach in the area should the incident reoccur.
