Hopeworks Ghana distributes sanitary towels to girls, women in Sowada community

Hopeworks Ghana has distributed sanitary pads and other hygienic products to over 100 adolescent girls and women in Sowada, a deprived community in the Ga South Municipality in Greater Accra Region.

The Youth Development focused NGO spearheaded the project in collaboration with Helphygiene, a US based Non-Governmental Organization to coincide with the 5th anniversary of Hope Week celebrations a flagship initiative by Hope Works Ghana which annually gives to deprived communities and also contribute to the promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. Hope Week started in Kasoa in the Central Region 5 years ago and had since benefitted about 2,750 needy children/families from 4 deprived communities. “It is a charity project aimed at spreading the message of hope, making consistent effort of bringing hope to the less fortunate in society, reflecting on the importance of generous giving and teaching the essence of giving back to society with emphasis on deprived communities with very low/no income”.

According to Mr. Patrick Akuffo, President of the organization, “Hopeworks Ghana and Helphygiene partnered to bring this project to the community because it was important to maintain good hygiene during menstruation to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections adding that “many women living in such deprived areas used rags, papers among other inappropriate materials to manage their menstrual flow which does not work very well and can also introduce them to infections”.

Faheemat Mohammed a member of the team, demonstrated the appropriate usage of sanitary towels to the beneficiaries and also educated them on the advantages ensuring proper hygiene as women before during and after their monthly periods. Some of the beneficiaries who had no idea about the usage of sanitary pads in turn demonstrated what they had learnt to gauge their preparedness to use sanitary pads instead of their tradition methods of managing their monthly flows.

The President of Hopeworks Ghana expressed appreciation to Helphygiene for the partnership and other sponsors like Blue Lens Photography, Tropical Juice, Karisa Foundation, Bodylove Organic Beauty and Cosmetics and other individuals who had contributed to the success of the project.
