Illegal mining activities have severely polluted water sources in the Ashanti Region, leading to a potential water shortage for residents in Obuasi and surrounding areas.

The Odaso treatment plant, the primary water source, is struggling to operate due to high pollution levels, with 60% of treated water going to waste.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) warns that if the situation persists, the plant may need to shut down, forcing water to be transported from Kumasi to meet demand.

The rising cost of treating polluted water is also straining the company's operations, threatening sustainable water supply in the region.
