A report by the Ghana Statistical Service has revealed that over 1,000 children aged 12-17 in the Nkwanta North District have been in a marital union, with 57% being girls.

The Head of the Gender Department at the Oti Regional Coordinating Council, Esther Hammond, has expressed concern over the high incidence of child marriages, citing its detrimental effects on education, health, and development.

To address this, the Department of Gender, with UNFPA funding, has engaged stakeholders in a consultative meeting to develop action plans to prevent child marriage and protect children's rights.
