South Tongu DCE tours Comboni Technical Vocational Institute fire disaster scene

District Chief Executive (DCE) of South Tongu, Emmanuel Louis Agama, on Thursday visited Comboni Technical Vocational Institute (COMBOTECH) after fire had gutted part of the boy’s dormitory in the school to ascertain the extent of the damage.

According to sources, the fire started around 9 am on Wednesday and no casualties have been recorded but the fire consumed personal belongings at the dormitory within a short period of time.

The DCE who was accompanied by the management of the assembly expressed worry over the unfortunate incident and assured the authorities of the school that, he will do his best to find lasting solution to the problem as quickly as possible.

He also lamented over the poor nature of the dormitory where there are several cracks in the building which endangers the lives of the students.

He, therefore, promised to write a proposal to the GETFund Secretariat for them to come on board to build a new dormitory for the school.

Hon. Korbla Mensah Woyome, Member of Parliament (MP)of South Tongu Constituency who was also at the scene, said he will also give out his widow's mite to bring relief to the students so that they can focus on their studies.

He added that the school authorities have started a self-helped project to build a new dormitory for the school but it has stalled due to financial constraints. So, he has promised them to donate 100 bags of cement and as soon as possible he has to redeem his promise.

The MP emphasised that he will be in touch with the NADMO head office, the Minister of Interior with his deputy as well as the Minister of Education so that they can collaborate to give the necessary attention to the infrastructure challenges in the school.

Mr. Harry Peter, The Principal of Comboni Technical Vocational Institute (COMBOTECH) said the dormitory contains 150 boys from 1st year to 3rd year but due to the outbreak of Coronavirus disease, the first and second-year students were asked to go home so only 25 boys in the third year were the ones whose belongings were destroyed in the fire.

He said the Ghana National Fire Service noted that they are yet to detect the cause of the fire and pleaded with the students to remain calm as the authorities of the school are working to give them the maximum support.
