ECG to develop meter production standards

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is to soon develop standards for meter production, according to the Deputy Minister of Energy in charge of Power, William Owuraku Aidoo.

Currently, there is a prevailing situation of high demand for meters and an unmatching supply in the country. Thus, this move by the ECG would “directly link consumers to meter producing companies, while maintaining quality,” the Deputy Minister said.

Furthermore, the Ministry, he added, is engaging in extensive stakeholder consultations at all levels through to cabinet to address all power related concerns in the sector. He further emphasized the commitment on their part to ensure the energy industry’s continued growth.

He made this statement when a delegation from the Secretariat of the Ghana Energy Awards (GEA), on Wednesday June 8, paid a working visit to the Ministry.

The team comprised Dr Kwame Ampofo, a member of the Awarding Panel, Ing. Henry Teinor, the Event Director, and Nicholas Frimpong-Manso a Co-organiser, as well as some representatives of the GEA Secretariat. They were received by Mr Owuraku Aidoo, and the Director of Power at the Ministry, Mr Solomon Adjetey.

The purpose of the call, among others, was to acquaint the latter with activities leading up to the organization of the 2022 edition of the prestigious Ghana Energy Awards. It was also intended to actively involve the Ministry in the GEA’s programmes as a significant sector initiative.

Dr Ampofo noted that the GEA deemed it expedient to include the Ministry in its ongoing activities toward this year’s event organization, especially as the Awards Scheme is a recognised sector initiative. Moreover, committing its support to the Ghana Energy Awards Streetlight Installation Scheme is indicative of the Ministry’s keen interest in the affairs of the Awards initiative, hence the call.

On his part, Mr Owuraku Aidoo shared his enthusiasm for the Ministry’s involvement in the whole Awards organization, especially regarding the decision on the theme, which is centered around energy transition.

He admitted “energy transition is an area that has been in much discussion at the Ministry,” and stressed the importance of working towards net zero emission goals.

Meanwhile, the GEA Streetlight Installation Initiative is an offshoot of the Ghana Energy Awards Scheme intended for the apex award winners; Energy Personalities (Male and Female), to have streetlights installed in selected communities across the country.

Ing. Henry Teinor, the GEA’s Event Director, noted that the benefitting communities or schools would be decided in collaboration with the Energy Personalities and the Ministry of Energy to ensure the desired impact is achieved.

For the impact of this initiative to achieve an even distribution, Mr Solomon Adjetey, Director of Power at the Energy Ministry, advised that the programme be handled in a regionally balanced manner so no parts of the country are left out.
