Ecobank Ghana marks 10th anniversary of Ecobank Day at the South Labone Girls Technical Institute

A decade of impact – Ecobank Day celebrates its 10th anniversary

Ecobank, a leading pan-African bank, is commemorating its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of immense impact on the continent's banking sector.
This milestone anniversary marks a decade of our unwavering commitment to making a difference amongst the local communities in which we work and live.

Speaking at the ceremony held at South Labone Girls Technical Institute, Acting Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, MS Joana Mensah said they are thrilled to introduce a new chapter in their journey as they launch their three-year ‘Transforming Africa Through Education’ campaign in partnership with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). This theme underscores our dedication to shaping the future of our continent by equipping its people with essential skills.

According to her, Ecobank will be focussing on digital education and creating opportunities for children and youth so they receive the digital skills they will need for tomorrow’s jobs

" Ecobank Day is our flagship annual Corporate and Social Responsibility event and a day on which we ‘give back’ to our local communities, not just here in Ghana, but also in 32 other countries across Africa. We help the vulnerable and deserving members of society and seek to make a real and beneficial difference to them" she said.

"We are in an era of rapid technological advances, digitalisation and ‘always-on’ connectivity, which keep changing so rapidly in everyday life, activities and expectations for businesses and individuals. In large part, this is being facilitated by the ready and rapid adoption of smart phones, tablets, etc. which act as the enablers and gateway to digital empowerment" she added.

At Ecobank, we take the issue of corporate social responsibility very seriously, in every individual affiliate country and also at the group level.

However considering our new campaign, aimed at ‘Transforming Africa Through Education’, and the specific theme for 2023, ‘Excel with Digital Skills’, as already mentioned, we are here today to make a donation to two schools along these lines" she said.

We are equipping an ICT Lab with 21 computers, Tables and chairs, a Projector, and a UPS at the Potters Village Orphanage, at Dodowa.

Moreover here at SLATECH, we have brought contractors to site to work at rehabilitating an ICT Lab, which will also be equipped with 21 computers, Tables and chairs, a Projector, and a UPS. Three of your classrooms will also be furnished with Students’ Dual desks, and chairs provided to match the long tables at the Dressmaking department, as some students usually stand on their feet for lessons.

It is our expectation that these donations will help the students in these two schools improve their academic and practical performances, particularly digital skills, which is our main focus.

We want students of SLATECH to learn in a very conducive environment, just like students of better endowed schools, hence the provision of the desks and additional chairs. It is our hope that both students and teachers would protect these items, so they would last longer to serve the needs of many more students in the years ahead.

We expect that the rehabilitation and installation of the labs will take about four weeks to complete, by which time the desks and chairs would have also been delivered. We therefore hope to revisit these two schools by the end of November to commission the computer labs.

As part of this donation, Ecobank will also organise training in ICT for students of the two schools, after the commissioning of the labs. I will encourage you, the students, to take those training sessions seriously to enable you grasp the needed digital skills that will make you competitive on the global stage.

Under the theme ‘Excel with Digital Skills’ the Ecobank Day 2023, is focusing on raising awareness and knowledge about the importance of children and youth having digital skills. It is imperative for them to have deeper and solid grounding in digital skills. Having such skills will be truly life changing for both the youth and children. It will also enable Africa to leapfrog and accelerate its development. We want to see a major ramp up of digital education. We want a Ghana where our children and youth are prepared for the evolving jobs of today and tomorrow.
