SocioServe-Ghana undertakes clean-up exercise at Sangonaa

Socioserve-Ghana, an NGO located in Akosombo has organized a Clean Up Exercise at SANGONAA Beach in the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly, Greater Accra Region in commemoration of this year’s World Ocean Day.

This exercise forms part of activities aimed at developing Ledzokuku as a Waste intelligent community by promoting effective management of plastic waste.

The exercise involved 25 trained volunteer waste pickers, fishermen, community members from five communities within the municipality namely Akro East, Akro West, Lascala, Zongo and Tsuibleoo South.

An information van was used to educate the communities on proper plastic management and regular clean ups 2 days prior to the event as well as on the day of the Clean Up.

The event began as early as 9:00am with a clean up of the beach and other areas close to the beach. The volunteers were provided with nose masks, gloves, rakes, shovels, wheel barrows and other cleaning equipments and materials to ensure that the exercise was done effectively without any risks.

The clean up focused on segregating plastic waste from the other waste for the plastic waste to be conveyed to a Coliba Waste Management buy back center. The Project Officer from Socioserve-Ghana, Mr. Peter Koomson informed participants to make clean ups a routine, especially segregating plastic waste for recycle because of the adverse effect of plastic waste on the environment.

He commended participants for participating in the exercise and also expressed Socioserve-Ghana’s appreciation to the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly for their support. He encouraged the volunteers to educate members of their various communities on the effects of plastics waste.

The Clean Up exercise was undertaken in collaboration with the Municipal Environmental Office and saw the Municipal Waste Officer, Mr. Yaw Adusei actively participating in the Clean Up exercise with his team.

Socioserve-Ghana is grateful to the UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme for funding this exercise.
