Central University celebrates Women's Day with Ningo and Prampram SHS

As part of the International Women’s Day celebration, Central University's Women’s Commission in collaboration with the school's Parliament House has engaged students of Ningo Senior High Technical and Prampram Senior High schools in a mock parliament on the theme: "Embracing equity across all fields of study."

The event that took place in Ningo Senior High Technical School had two sessions; a mock parliament that was infused with a panel discussion and a debate. It was graced by female representatives from the various faculties of Central University (School of Law, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Nursing, Central Business School, and School of Pharmacy).

Also present were SRC executives, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Clerk.

During the mock parliament sitting, the panel briefed the students on course selection, job opportunities for each course, and also how women can stand firm in any field they find themselves.

The panels for the discussion included Ms. Abba (Communication Studies), Ms. Chijioke (Pharmacy), Ms. Baidoo (Nursing), Ms. Quist (Law), and Ms. Anani (Business).

The event was interactive with a question and answer session that created more engagement.

A debate between Ningo Senior High Technical and Prampram Senior High School was held and each school presented three debaters to speak on the topic, "When attempting to create a more harmonious society, gender is a more important factor than class or income."

The debate was fierce, and at the end, the judges came to a consensus and declared Ningo Senior High Technical School the winners.

According to Hon. Hayford Mensah, the Speaker of Parliament, he was excited to see the young girls freely and confidently express their opinions on such a subject. He believed it has opened their minds to think outside the box on issues of gender equality and fairness.

Ms. Chijioke, the Women’s Commissioner, also mentioned that the country should organize such events for senior high schools to enable them to have a fair knowledge of what is ahead of them. She added that students at that age are capable of making some decisions on their own. The head teachers of both schools expressed their gratitude to Central University SRC and the Parliament for engaging the students and encouraging them to aim higher.

Certificate and awards were presented to each debater and the winning school, Ningo Senior High Technical. The presentation was done by Mr. Ayimey Victor, SRC President and his Vice Mr. Calistus Ghandi.

This was the first time the senior high school students had experienced a mock parliament. This gave them the opportunity to see how activities and rulings take place in Parliament as some students from the school were selected to participate while it was in session.
