Russia-Ukraine Conflict-President Zelensky Wishes to Develop Closer Ties with The AU

The war in his country has now gone past two months with thousands of deaths and millions of people already evacuated.

So far, a number of African countries have been neutral or muted in their criticism of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine due to Moscow’s longstanding relations with the continent since the Cold War era.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested to develop closer ties with the African Union. The announcement was made by President Macky Sall of Senegal, the Chairperson of the African Union for 2022.

According to Dalvarice Ngoudjou, a Cameroonian expert in international relations believes there are various aspects to it.

He disclosed; "The first variable is that the Ukrainian president Zaleski realized that a good part of the African states feels much closer to Russia than to Ukraine. And this is an element that is very important in international forums, especially the United Nations, where there is a strong desire on the part of Ukraine and certain Western countries to isolate Russia, and an important element on which this person should lean is the African continent. I think this is one of the reasons why President Zaleski is doing everything he can to be able to speak before the African Union."

Can AU really offer assistance in the Russia-Ukraine war apart from peaceful solution to the conflict?
