WAEC Asked to Release BECE Results Statistics Over Mass Failure

Junior High School (JHS) students who sat for the 2021 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release results statistics of the national examination.

The request for the release of 2021 BECE results statistics comes after some of last year’s BECE graduates said they put in much effort to pass the 2021 basic school examination but were marked down by the Examinations Council.

“Please WAEC, we humbly request the breakdown of the 2021 BECE for School results in terms of the total number of graduates or candidates who got distinction, pass, credit and fail not forgetting their percentages.

It is possible a marking scheme was used but we need a bit of explanation as parents and graduate students are complaining too much,” a student identified as Alfred on behalf of his colleagues petitioned the Examinations Body.

Released on February 28, 2022, WAEC in a blog post sighted by EducationWeb said the subject results of 138 candidates have been cancelled for various offences including bringing foreign materials to the examination hall.

The Management of the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) Monday said the entire results of 46 candidates were also cancelled for the offence of either sending mobile phones into the examination hall or impersonation.

“The subject results of 148 candidates and the entire results of 109 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into various cases of alleged examination malpractice,” it stated in the blog post.

The scripts of candidates from 24 Junior High Schools (JHS) in certain subjects the Council indicated are undergoing scrutiny. The withheld results it said may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations.

WAEC following the release of the 31st BECE results has cautioned students to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee. “Candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated,” It noted.

A total of 572,167 prospective candidates representing 287,730 boys and 284,437 girls entered for the examination. Among the registered candidates, 61 had visual impairment and 321 were identified with hearing impairment.
