We Have All the Natural Resources but Still Beg, There’s Something Wrong with African Leaders’ Mind – Paul Kagame

In spite of the abundant natural resources that most West African countries possess, they are still economically poor and under-developed. The living standards of the people are very low and basic social services are deplorable.

For this reason, many African countries have to borrow from international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). For that matter, there is growing concern about the level of debt accumulated by countries such as Ghana.

Paul Kagame is a Rwandan politician and former military leader. He is the fourth and current president of Rwanda, having taken office in 2000.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has chastised his African counterparts for wasting resources in their own countries instead of asking for money.

Speaking on African countries’ borrowing habits, he stated that there is something wrong with the thinking of those in charge of Africa’s problems.

According to Rwanda’s President, if resource owners go about asking for money, it plainly proves that something is wrong with their thinking.

“If the owners of natural resources go around begging, then you should know there’s something wrong with their minds”.

Some post-colonial African countries have made considerable progress since independence. They have improved social services and expanded the infrastructure considerably. However, most countries in the sub-region have not made as much progress as was expected at independence.

There are still huge problems and until Africa’s leaders in concert with their citizens take strong measures to solve these problems, Africa will find it difficult to catch up with the rest of the world.
