Why Doctors Reject Postings to Upper East Region as More Demand Transfers to Leave?

Doctors who were posted to the Upper East Region of Ghana have refused to report to their posts whereas others who are already working in the Region are also seeking to leave.

The sad development according to authorities is gravely affecting healthcare delivery in the area that is already constraint in terms of doctor-patient ratio in accordance with the United Nations standards.

Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi who is worried over the sad development revealed o Bolgatanga-based A1 radio that about 5 doctors who were posted to the area about four months ago have refused to turn up.

“It’s a major problem, for example, just last year in November five doctors were posted to the region. As I speak now, none of them has shown up and several calls to them have not yielded any results. Those that we have already working here, most of them are requesting for transfer out of the region,” he revealed.

He urged health personnel to accept postings to the area indicating that the Region is accommodative contrary to the perception out there while appealing to health professionals who hail from the area to return home to serve their people.

Doctors Are Afraid They Might Not Be Taken Care Of

But Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi concluded on this note; “We are calling on every person, we have indigenous people like doctors, nurses, midwives. We are calling on them to return home and serve their people because we are having it very difficult to get people to work in our hospital. The region is a calm place. I have been here one year already with no problems. So that impression of the fact that when you come to the region you will not be taken care of is a thing of the past”. He urged.
